Yesterday Arts University College Bournemouth awarded me with an Honorary Fellowship for my contribution to Spatial Arts and Design. I feel very honoured and very welcomed by everybody at AUCB. Thank you to Stephanie James for an amazing calm oration unlike my very nervous response. Big thank you for the amazing hospitality and fantastic organisation of the day. Congratulations to all the graduating students. A special thank you to Sally Hope.

My Mum came with us last night and she had seen the original stage show in 1958. This is a scan she sent me of the original programme she has kept all these years.
Last night we went to an incredible performance of the film West Side Story, at the Royal Albert Hall, cleaned up, original singing but with a full live orchestra. INCREDIBLE IT WAS BRILLIANT. We had amazing seats and could totally absorb the whole experience. JETS & SHARKS! The colours the attention to detail was absolutely AMAZING!!! ON ABSOLUTELY EVERY LEVEL FANTASTIC!!!
Yesterday Luke, Lemmy and I went to see and understand a new space we are very soon changing into a place. A few interesting challenges especially the level change.
I am working on a new school building for Kingswood College of Arts with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Architects.
I had a great day leading a workshop with students, locals and staff at Kingswood College of Arts, Hull. The college is having a café ‘Rosie’s’, named after one of the college’s tutors who sadly died last year. Our aim for the day was to write a poem and then get design ideas started for a wall in the café. I was so pleased, together everybody, wrote a great poem and the creativity was flowing when it came to the visuals. I am now going to develop the ideas and go back in a couple of weeks and do a presentation to the whole group for their feedback.
No rain for nearly two days, Brian & Phil managed to get out there and made an amazing start on my Vinyl Lounge project. Gloomily I have too much work on, which is all at the concept and design stage and so can’t get out there and paint this one, I would love to, so instead I have left it to the experts, who are doing a very very fine job.
I am in the middle of an installation. Ran out of neon green went to Chrome & Black and they said they sold all the neon sprays to the Coldplay concert. No sprays for a couple of weeks! Disaster!! So went round to Cowling and Wilcox, hopefully, and managed to get their last two cans. Saved! But I think that might be it for a while as long as Coldplay are on tour!
Oh dear a bit of a disaster this morning, was specifying my paints for the Vinyl Lounge and they tipped off the end of the table and flew on the floor. A bit of an Ikea mix and shame about the rug!
When I was on Foundation at St Martin’s, I was taught how to lay flat gouache and I really thought it was a waste of time. When was I going to use that technique! But maybe it has come in handy many years later! Colours all chosen for the building, now just need the rain to stop next week.
Earlier this year Cathedral Group gave me this old marketing suite, one storey building on The Old Vinyl Factory site to convert into a creative stimulating space. I stripped out the interior which was very corporate with horrid curved walls and bad carpet. A new ply floor being laid and a small but fun kitchen and much more. The outside will have a garden that will supply food for Vinyl Canteen and work with the surrounding community. Work starts next week on the painting of the exterior. So this weekend I am getting the paint colours exactly right.
I think this was my first bit of typography, I must have done for a school ‘Jubilee’ project, I was very into embroidery when I was small and sewed all the time. I can see where my love of decorative fonts goes back to.
