AMERICAN GRAFFITI

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

We arrived into San Francisco in the middle of a beautiful sunny day, we had a very enthusiastic guy who picked us up from the airpot and wanted to tell us and show us, anything and everything we wanted to see in his city. So this was our first stop Clarion Alley, a back street completely covered in graffiti and updated continually. There was so much! Here are a few that caught my eye

TIE A YELLOW RIBBON

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

We visited an small temple, there was no one around and it had a very good feeling. This is a Banyan tree — a huge tree — have looked it up as I did not know before why these trees are wrapped so the information I found might not be correct but — Sacred symbol — It is believed that after attaining enlightenment, Buddha sat under a Banyan tree for seven days absorbed in his newfound realization. SPIRITS, ASTROLOGY AND ALCHEMY

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

In Scott’s Market we found these figurines, we were told by the shopkeeper this group (from left to right) were protectors of a mountain village, education, and a a river about 40-50 years old but I have no idea if they are or not. From the article Jocelyne sent me Folk Elements in Burmese Buddhism, The Alantic Magazine, February 1958, our little group look like they are local Nat’s rather than one of the 36 national Nat’s but I am not sure if this is correct or not.

We were also told girls have to be very careful when they grow their hair really long as people often cut their ponytails off if they are on a bus or not looking and sell them for wigs and they command a high price.

PICK UP STICKS

Luke and I love this bamboo scaffolding, the apparent fragility of it. The very sad thing we heard in Yangon is if a building is covered in bamboo scaffolding and then shrouded in netting, it is likely that is the last you will see of it, next will be demolition, making way for new buildings.
