THE MOVEMENT STOOLS

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

Our classic stools are now in use, Bases made by Luke and tops are cut from reclaimed school laboratory tops. Morag hand painted the stools, some incorporating Lemn Sissay’s tweets.

UP ON THE ROOF

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

One of  the last jobs last week was painting the canopy roof in situ. I have to say I found it quite scary near the edge but Frankie and I got it done before the rain started. I did find it quite funny!

STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU

Monday, July 30th, 2012

Eric Gauster who is the creator of londonbicycleculture.com took this pic last week. We really want our cafe to be a safe place for cyclists to leave their bikes for hours in the day and when they come back they will be safe, alternatively just take a ride to The Movement Cafe — corner of Waller Way with Greenwich High Road, SE10 — just next to the Greenwich DLR — and hang out at the café — good food and drinks, we opened last Saturday.

CRAFT CLUB — DAY 17: MACHINE APPLIQUE

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

Today we have been making applique ‘Type’ cushions. It is Lizzie’s first time using a sewing machine and she is a very quick learner and has done extremely well. But the gold star has to go to Kathryn as she is an expert at using the machine — very even confident stitching. A nice relaxing productive Sunday.

100M SPRINT

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

We had a lovely day out in the sun, painting stripes. A little bit of a slow start as we have this whole length to do and right round the corner but we will get there. Beautiful day for it! Back there in a couple of hours.

MEN AT WORK

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

Yesterday on site, serious work getting done. All very exciting.

CRAFT CLUB 2012 — DAY 10: STENCILS & SPRAYING

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

Kathryn and Lizzie have decided all the work we are doing has been like a craft boot camp and therefore to be named ‘Craft Club 2012’. So far they have done varnishing, grids, undercoats, laying flat colour, shifting loads of boards, cutting stencils, and the list goes on. Tomorrow we are out in the field painting a 100m hoarding. The last bit it sewing cushions. When we have finished I think Lizzie and Kathryn will have gained a whole load of new skills that hopefully they will use throughout their careers. Lemmy is always at hand to supervise us.

TATE TANKS OPEN

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

The Tanks at Tate Modern opened this week with an amazing party. Cartlidge Levene and Studio Myerscough have designed the wayfinding and signage for the subterranean space which was once the oil tanks that fired Bankside power station – a fantastic night of celebration after years of hard work by all! Tate’s ambition of using these magnificent industrial spaces for performance art has finally been realised!

We have developed a graphic language and material application to suit the raw, industrial aesthetic. Two simple mediums are used for graphic language: projection and fly posters. Both are direct methods of application which reveal the raw, contoured, surfaces of the ‘as found’ concrete walls.

The Tanks project is the precursor of our work for Herzog & De Meuron’s new ten-storey Tate Modern extension which will sit directly above the Tanks, ‘TM2’ will open in 2014.

HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL BARNSLEY

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

It has been a long time coming and we had to fight many battles to get this wall painted at AHMM’s new school Holy Trinity, Barnsley. But I am so glad we persevered, Brian and Phil are in the middle of painting at the moment. As you can see my colour spec for this was like a paint by numbers.

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

We are making our classic stools for the Greenwich project this time we have had the tops made from reclaimed lab tops, the wood is beautiful. But Morag can’t help herself and is experimenting with varnishes, paints, letters and words.

WINDOWS + DOORS + DECKING

The openings have been cut into the containers. The decking is going down we have to use new scaffold planks as we could not get old ones in time but they will weather soon enough with this rain.

MORE COLOUR GOING ON

Monday, July 16th, 2012

BACK IN THE STUDIO — UNDERCOVER!

Sunday, July 15th, 2012

34 exterior boards of ply — loads to do and very little time —  varnish first, draw the grid, tape up, undercoat and finally add the most exciting bit — Colour. I have three great painting assistants helping me, Frankie Legere, Kathryn Cross & Lizzie Toole. we have a good 10 days work ahead of us as I also have about 50m of hoarding to paint insitu so we need the weather to improve.

SATURDAY — GOOD PROGRESS DESPITE THE RAIN

Sunday, July 15th, 2012

All the scaffolding was completed yesterday. The new inserts and doors will start work early next week.

NOW WHAT

Sunday, July 8th, 2012

Last night I took part in the Now What discussion organised by the Brighton graduates, as was the show which has a lot of really great work, really worth going to have a look, last day today 8th until 5pm, Netil House 1 – 7  Westgate Street, Hackney, London E8 3RL. Each contributor did a 5 minute stint (Evelin Kasikov, Catherine Rossi, Noel Douglas, Julia and me — hosted by Roderick Mills) and then the questions started between the contributors, a panel of graduates and the audience. We discussed unpaid internships, classification of existing disciplines, the future for graduates and more. I had a very thought provoking evening and I am pleased to be part of a debate that really did involve the audience and I think we could have carried on all night. Congratulations to all the Brighton graduates and thank you for asking me to be involved.

21 DAYS TO GO

Work has started on our Greenwich installation. I hope the rain does not hold us up to much lots to do.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

I am working on the New Waverley School, Birmingham and on Tuesday I spent the whole doing workshops with the students. We had great fun, poems and creatures in the morning. Pattern making in the afternoon. It needed lots of patience, but as you can see the students did brilliantly.

The installation in Greenwich is moving forward rapidly and I am aiming to paint all the panels in the studio and so another set of colours needed to be chosen.

I have spent the morning working out the colours for my huge wall installation in a new school Holy Trinity, Barnsley by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
