ORIGINAL VISUALS

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

This was my very original collage for the LCC shows done around February this year. I always find it so important that the final outcome should be as close as the original thoughts. I think I have done pretty well but I would like more greenery growing up the containers and hanging down, but that does take a lot of maintenance so we have Rosemary and Greek Oregano, which smells lovely especially when it rains.

Final collage done just before we started the build.

HERB GARDEN

Sunday, May 27th, 2012

Had to get up super early and go down to Columbia road to get the plants for the LCC Summer Shows. Was hard to get enough of the same plant but went to the herb stall and managed to get loads of Rosemary and Greek Oregano. My car is so small it took three trips. But it was worth it. Another lovely day to be out in the sun planting.

72 – 50 = 22 — STILL TO DO — TOMORROW!

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Another fabulous day out in the sun, but we had to battle with the wind but they are the trials and tribulations working outside. I am very grateful to Frankie, Sarah and Ruta, LCC students, who helped me today and we got lots done.

72 – 22 = 50 — TO DO IN ONE DAY! TOMORROW!

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

Today was super hot and the stencils were elastic. Big thanks to Frankie, LCC student, who helped me all day in the baking sun. We only managed to do one layer in 3 hours but thinking positively we did it and it looks great.
Tomorrow we have an hours each layer!!

I SPOKE HERE!

Monday, May 21st, 2012

I am still amazed that I was able to speak in this fantastic building to a great audience. The theme of the conference this year was ‘SUSTAIN’ and my talk title was ‘Me to You, You to Me (ad infinitum)’. Thank you to everybody at Typo Berlin giving me the opportunity.  A couple of reviews from Paul Woods & Slanted Magazine and thanks to all the people who came to talk to me over the last few days.

THE PREGNANT OYSTER (SCHWANGERE AUSTER)

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Another daunting task ahead! This room holds a few people! Yesterday I was the second speaker on the first day of the Typo Berlin Conference. The building is amazing the Haus der kulturn der Welt, designed in 1957 by the American architect Hugh Stubbins Jr. as part of the Interbau exhibition. Feel very proud to have spoken in such a handsome building in the middle of a beautiful park. It reminds me of another building I am working on at the moment.

Floors rather than walls. Guy Noble the UCLH Trust curator and I worked together on the art strategy for the new Macmillan Cancer building in London, designed by Hopkins Architects. There were not many clear walls to apply art to in the central spaces, the building has been designed to be very open and welcoming. Each landing had a waiting area and so why not put the art on the floor. So then we put a brief together titled ‘Things that make you think about other things’. We were so pleased the artists we asked agreed and these are the results. Each shape is lazer cut out of linoleum using colour range existing.

CHANTILLY LACE RUG

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Today I went to see the rugs I designed for the new UCLH Macmillan Cancer building, London. Part of a series of rugs I co-curated with Guy Noble. My artwork was submitted for production last August and so it has been a long wait to see the final pieces. I will post the other rugs over the next few days by Peter Blake, Grayson Perry, Pure Evil and Rob Ryan. Plus a huge installation by Stuart Henderson being installed over the next few weeks.

PAGE 1

Friday, May 11th, 2012

The proof of my Page 1 for the book — Page 1: Great Expectations curated by GraphicDesign& — Seventy Graphic Solutions — book available now.

For my Page1 — I wanted to conduct an experiment to see how the reader/listener would understand the text if the words were arranged in columns, in which multiple words were grouped together and where all punctuation was removed. The words are listed in the order they appear, with multiples shown under the word’s first appearance. There are 278 words in this piece of text and 166 are unique. The font used is Typewriter Condensed.

Then I read the original and my version out loud. The former obviously flows as intended, while in comparison my staccato version encourages the reader to experiment with emphasis, allowing different interpretations of the piece.
