99 GREEN TOMATOES

Friday, October 29th, 2010

My great friend Lucy Swift read my plight about abandoning my last tomatoes and leaving them out in the cold and she came to their rescue by sending me this recipe for green tomato chutney. Her actual words were ‘I’ve made it before and it’s lovely!’ ‘And great for Xmas presents!’. So I went and picked the last tomatoes and I will make it this weekend. Thank you Lucy.

SHOUT, SHOUT, LET IT ALL OUT

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

At the PV of 80 artists 100 hours, photographer David Thomson captured us and stuck us behind the camera, and then told us we had to make 5 expressions in 5 seconds. These are the results, a fantastic set of expressive portraits, go to more for more.

THE END OF THE SEASON

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

23 October — 15 small / 3 medium / 7 long = 25

It looks like my tomato days are over for 2010, these are my last ones, I have about another 50 still on the plants but they are suffering from the extreme weather.
I feel quite sad. But looking on the bright side I can start all over again next year.

CLOUDS ARE NOT SPHERES, MOUNTAINS ARE NOT CONES, COASTLINES ARE NOT CIRCLES…

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

As it is Sunday morning I am listening to radio 4 and I just heard that Benoit Mandelbrot who was credited with discovering fractals in 1975 has died. He invented the word ‘Fractals’ and was the first person to represent them visually. I mention this as I have been intrigued and fascinated by fractals over the last 10 years and has influenced some of my work and is often in my mind.

Neonist Kerry Ryan and artist Declan McMullan, curators and producers of 80 + Artists 100 + hours put on a great launch party last night with lots of art, performance and alcohol. I was pleased as my reconfigured piece, red scribble neon is positioned prominently above the bar.

CLOSE-UP

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Just heard on the radio that the ceramic sunflower seeds are giving off too much dust, the installation can only now be viewed from the bridge, I feel so sad for the artist, this is such a disaster for the piece.

TURNING JAPANESE

Friday, October 15th, 2010

I sneakily took some pictures at the Future Beauty: 30 years of Japanese Fashion exhibition PV last night at the Barbican. It is my friend, Catherine Ince’s first exhibition since she left the British Council and became a curator at the Barbican Art Gallery. A very beautiful and elegant debut.

FRIEZE TODAY

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Huge queues and very hot. Some interesting stuff. But the space that engaged me the most was David Shrigley’s, the dog above is one of his sculptures. He was there doing tattoos on people, I would have loved to wait for one but the crowd was too big and had a lot to go and see.

SUNFLOWER, SUNFLOWER, WHEN YOUR SEEDS FALL TO THE GROUND

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Ian Cartlidge and I were over at the Tate Modern today so we took the opportunity to walk on the bed of 15 million replica sunflower seeds made of porcelain covering the turbine hall, as part of a installation by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. From a distance it looked just like a pebble beach with groups of people sitting, walking, chatting and then when you got closer and closer it was full of wonderfully stripy seeds with amazing detail, astonishing.
